Peru: Today & Yesterday
Yesterday, Humala, a social-democratic anti-imperialist defeated the Kieko Fujimori, daughter of the former fascist dictator in the presidential election.
The history of the country is important.
Below is a documentary made during the height of Peru's Maoist insurrection, showing the conditions of Peru that led to support for "El Sendero Luminoso"(The Shining Path).
In 1989-1991, the U.S. imperialists were reveling in victories against the former Soviet Union. Neo-Liberalism was on the march. However, in Peru, this sparked support for Mao Zedong Thought.
In the same period, the "Caracazo", an armed revolutionary uprising in Venezuela, sparked the beginnings of the Bolivarian movement which culminated in Hugo Chavez taking power.
What will the victory of Humala bring? We shall see.
One wonders what impact, if any, the Maoist revolt document below, has had these years later, on the election of an anti-imperialist President?
